Can a Power Station Run a Gas Furnace?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 11, 2026 · How we calculate
A gas furnace is dead without electricity. The igniter, the inducer fan, the controls and the blower all run on 120 V; Goodman’s spec sheet puts it plainly: all its furnaces are built “for use on 115 VAC”. We plan on about 600 W running and 1,400 W to start, a cautious pairing from Honda’s generator chart, and in cold weather about half of each hour, so 300 W on average.
At that rate a 1,000 Wh power station lasts about 2.8 hours and a 2,000 Wh one about 5.7 hours. A newer furnace can do much better, as the next section shows.

Newer furnaces use far less
For most gas furnaces made since July 2019, DOE’s furnace-fan efficiency rules assume a brushless (ECM-type) motor, which draws much less than the older PSC motors. Trane publishes blower watts by speed for its 80,000 BTU S8X1 furnace:
| Blower speed (Trane S8X1, 80k BTU) | Blower watts | Blower on 1,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|
| Speed tap 2 of 9 | 105 W | 8.1 hours |
| Speed tap 4 of 9 | 263 W | 3.2 hours |
| Speed tap 9 of 9 | 667 W | 1.3 hours |
Measured at 0.5 inches of static pressure, blower only, running nonstop. Add the inducer and controls, and remember it cycles with the thermostat.
If your furnace was made after mid-2019, our 600 W planning figure is probably high. Check the blower amps on the furnace’s rating plate.
It has to be wired in properly
Furnaces are hardwired: Goodman’s installation manual calls for an electrical disconnect at the furnace and a separate fused circuit, with correct polarity and grounding. To run one from a power station you need a furnace power inlet or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
Never “backfeed” the house by plugging a power source into a wall outlet. OSHA warns that backfeeding can energize lines “for great distances”, which can kill a utility worker repairing them.
Practical tips
- Lower the thermostat a few degrees so the blower runs less of each hour.
- Set the fan to Auto, not On, so it only runs while heating.
- Test the setup before winter. Furnace controls are sensitive to polarity and grounding; an electrician can confirm the inlet is wired correctly.
