Can a Power Station Run a Sump Pump?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 11, 2026 · How we calculate
Yes, if the station can survive the start. A 1/2 HP pump runs at about 1,050 W, but every time the float switch trips it pulls roughly 2,150 W for an instant. A 1/3 HP pump is easier, at about 1,300 W to start.
Runtime depends on how hard it’s raining. We assume the pump runs 20% of the time, about 210 W on average, which gives about 4 hours on a 1,000 Wh station and 8.1 hours on 2,000 Wh. In a downpour it can run far more.

What popular pumps actually draw
The amps are on the pump’s label and spec sheet. Multiply by 115 V for a rough upper bound on running watts.
| Pump | Horsepower | Amps at 115 V | Roughly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoeller M53 | 1/3 HP (0.3) | 9.7 A | up to 1,100 W |
| Wayne CDU790 | 1/3 HP | 9.5 A | up to 1,100 W |
| Zoeller M98 | 1/2 HP | 9.4 A | up to 1,080 W |
| Wayne CDU800 | 1/2 HP | 10 A | up to 1,150 W |
Pumps like these come with a plug for an ordinary grounded 120 V outlet (Zoeller’s sheet lists a 3-wire cord plug; Wayne specifies a grounded GFCI outlet), so you can plug the pump straight into the power station. No transfer switch or electrician needed.
Power station or a battery backup pump?
A 2008 FEMA guide calls a battery backup pump “an inexpensive safeguard against basement flooding”. These are separate 12 V pumps that sit in the pit beside your main pump. They pump less: Zoeller says its Aquanot Fit 508 runs about 5.5 hours of continuous pumping on a fully charged deep-cycle battery (175-minute reserve capacity), and Wayne rates its ESP25 at 1,680 gallons an hour at a 10-foot lift.
A power station runs your main pump at full strength and does other jobs too, but it needs enough surge, and someone has to plug it in. A dedicated backup switches on by itself. If the basement floods while you’re away, that difference matters most.
Before the next storm
- Check your pump’s horsepower and amps on its label, and pick a station whose surge rating covers the start with some room to spare.
- Watch the pit during a storm to see how often the pump runs, then set the hours in the runtime calculator.
- Plug the pump into the station directly. Wayne’s manual calls for a 15 A grounded circuit; skip extension cords and power strips.
- For unattended protection, pair the station with a dedicated battery backup pump.
