Can a Power Station Run a Window Air Conditioner?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 11, 2026 · How we calculate
Yes, if it’s a small one. A 5,000 BTU window unit runs at about 450 W and needs around 1,100 W to start its compressor. Because it cycles, it averages about 225 W: roughly 3.8 hours on a 1,000 Wh power station and 7.6 hours on a 2,000 Wh one.
Frigidaire’s FFRE0533U1, a typical 5,000 BTU model, is rated 420 W and 3.7 A while cooling, close to our figure. Bigger units use more. Air conditioning drains a battery quickly, so it works best with solar coming in or a big battery.

Inverter ACs change the math
Newer variable-speed (inverter) window units slow down instead of switching off and on. ENERGY STAR lists Midea’s 8,000 BTU U-shaped inverter model (MAW08V1QWT) at a CEER of 15.0 and 38% less energy than the federal standard. Compare a basic unit:
| 12,000 BTU unit (DOE example) | CEER | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| At the federal minimum | 10.9 | 826 kWh |
| ENERGY STAR level | 14.7 | 612 kWh |
| DOE’s “best available” example | 15.4 | 584 kWh |
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program example, based on 750 hours of use a year. CEER is BTUs of cooling per watt-hour, so higher is better.
Cooling longer on a battery
- Cool one small room and keep its door closed.
- Set it as warm as is comfortable. ENERGY STAR suggests 78°F; the compressor then runs less of each hour.
- Plug the AC straight into the station. GE’s manual warns against extension cords with window units.
- Run it while the sun is out if you have panels: the solar input then goes straight into cooling.
- Check the plug. Many window units have an LCDI safety plug that needs a standard grounded outlet; it fits the AC outlets on most stations.
