Can a Power Station Run a Space Heater?
By Hicham M. · Updated October 11, 2026 · How we calculate
It can, but not for long. Plug-in space heaters usually top out at 1,500 W, and even with the thermostat cycling it about half the time (750 W average) a 1,000 Wh power station lasts about 1.1 hours. On high, nonstop, it’s closer to 34 min.
No plug-in heater gets more warmth out of each watt than another. DOE notes that electric resistance heating is 100% efficient: every watt becomes heat, whatever the box looks like. On a battery, it makes more sense to put the heat right next to your body.

Heater vs blanket on the same battery
| What you run | Watts | On 1,000 Wh | On 2,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Space heater on high (e.g. Lasko 754200) | 1,500 W | 34 min | 1.1 hours |
| Same heater on low (900 W) | 900 W | 57 min | 1.9 hours |
| Vornado VH200 on low | 750 W | 1.1 hours | 2.3 hours |
| Heated mattress pad, queen | about 120 W | 7.1 hours | 14 hours |
Nonstop runtimes with 85% inverter efficiency. Heater ratings are from Lasko and Vornado; the mattress pad figure is from a retailer listing for a Sunbeam queen pad.
Safety first
Space heaters are involved in about a third of home heating fires but nearly nine in ten heating-fire deaths, according to NFPA’s research for 2016–2020. The CPSC’s safety advice applies on a power station too: plug the heater in directly (never through an extension cord or power strip), keep it at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, and never leave it running while you sleep.
Staying warm without draining it
- Use an electric blanket or heated mattress pad. At roughly 60–120 W, it uses a tenth or less of what a heater does and runs all night on a mid-size station.
- If you must use a heater, use its low setting and heat one small, closed room.
- Many power stations can’t supply 1,500 W at all. Check the output column below before you buy.
- Never run a fuel-burning generator or heater indoors or in a garage. Carbon monoxide kills; keep generators outside, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
